Understanding Your Data

Gap analysis: the Prompts tab and Gaps closed

The Prompts tab of Gap analysis shows, question by question and engine by engine, where an AI answer names another brand and not yours. It also tracks the gaps you close over time.

One row per tracked question

Each row is a tracked question, with one cell for each AI engine: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. Each cell comes from the newest saved answer for that question on that engine inside the date range. A cell reads:

  • You. Your brand appears in the answer.
  • Gap. Your brand does not appear and the answer names at least one other brand.
  • Nobody. The answer names neither you nor another brand.
  • No answer. Nothing is saved for that engine in the range.
  • Not tracked. The question is not tracked on that engine.

No answer and Not tracked are never counted as a gap. A question tracked on one engine shows Not tracked on the others.

The Named instead column lists the other brands the gap answers named, with how many times.

The summary strip

  • Questions tracked.
  • Answers analysed.
  • Name another brand, not you. The share of answers that name another brand and not yours.
  • Gaps closed.

Gaps closed

Gaps closed compares your gaps with the period of the same length before the one you chose. For each question and engine:

  • Closed. It was a gap before, and the newest answer now names you.
  • New. It was not a gap before, and it is now.
  • Still open. Everything else.

The comparison is shown for ranges up to 180 days. All time has no comparison, because a comparison needs a whole period before the one you chose. On the page, All time is read as the last 365 days.

Answers by week

Answers by week is a chart with two lines: the share of answers that name you and the share that name another brand and not you. It shows a headline number for the latest week and how many points it moved against the week before. The chart appears once there are two or more weeks of answers.

Crawlability note

When your robots.txt asks a confirmed search or user bot of an engine to stay out, the Prompts tab says so and links to Crawlability, in careful words such as "This can keep ChatGPT from using your pages". It is a request in your file, never proof of what a bot does.

Filters and export

  • Question status: All questions, With a gap, Naming your brand everywhere, or Naming nobody.
  • Models and Date range.
  • A search box for questions. The columns are sortable.

Export the table as CSV, XLSX or JSON from the page. The PDF report also has a Gaps section.

What to do with a gap

Open Optimize with the button on the page to see the recommended actions. Use the Competitors page to see win or loss per question, and check Crawlability if an engine's bot is blocked. See From gap to fix: using Crawlability and Gap analysis together.
