Connecting Google Analytics (AI Referrals)

Connect Google Analytics to see how much real traffic AI platforms send to your site. LiveMentions already shows how often AI answers mention your brand. AI Referrals shows the visits that follow: which platform sent them, how engaged those visitors were, and what they converted.

Available on paid plans. Accounts on a trial or beta can open the page and preview it, but can't connect until they upgrade.

Before you start

  • A Google Analytics 4 property for your site. Older Universal Analytics properties aren't supported.
  • A Google account with access to that property.
  • A project in LiveMentions. Each project connects to one property.

Connect Google Analytics

  1. In the sidebar, open AI Referrals.
  2. Click Connect Google Analytics.
  3. Sign in with the Google account that has access to your property, and allow read-only access.
  4. Back in LiveMentions, choose your property in Choose a Google Analytics property. The dialog shows which Google account you're signed in as.
  5. Click Connect.

LiveMentions then brings in your last 30 days so the page isn't empty. Right after connecting you may see "Not synced yet, check back shortly". It then keeps itself up to date, and the page shows when it last synced.

What you'll see

Use the filters at the top to pick Last 7, 30 or 90 days and to look at one AI platform or all of them.

  • Sessions from AI. The number of visits from AI platforms, with the change compared with the previous period of the same length.
  • Engaged sessions. Visits where the person actually engaged with your site, according to Google Analytics.
  • Conversions. The conversions Google Analytics recorded for AI-referred sessions. This appears only if your property has conversion (key) events set up.
  • Revenue. Shown only if your property tracks purchases. If it doesn't, the tile is hidden. We never show an invented zero.
  • Sessions over time, by platform. One line per platform, so you can see which one is growing.
  • By AI platform. Each platform's share, side by side.
  • By landing page. The pages AI visitors arrive on first.

The page headline names the platform that drove the largest share of your AI-referred sessions.

How AI visits are identified

A visit counts as AI-referred when one of these is true:

  1. Google Analytics' own grouping. Google Analytics labels the session as AI Assistant traffic. This is also how Google's AI features can be included, because they can't be told apart by website address alone.
  2. A known AI platform. The visit came from one of these: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI or You.com. This matters because Google Analytics' AI grouping is new and may not have classified older visits.

Visits matching neither are not counted. We never guess.

Your data and privacy

  • Read-only. LiveMentions can read reports from your Google Analytics. It can't change anything.
  • Permissions requested: read-only access to Google Analytics, and your Google account's email address, so the page can show which account is connected.
  • Totals only. We store daily totals per platform and landing page. We don't store visitor-level or personal data.
  • Your access token is stored encrypted.

LiveMentions' use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Disconnect or change property

Click Disconnect on the AI Referrals page and confirm. The project stops syncing, and the data stored in LiveMentions for that project is deleted. You can reconnect at any time, or connect a different property. You can also remove access from your Google Account at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
